Akshayraj Kore
wins the 2nd Blitz tournament.
The
successive 2nd Blitz Championship was held on 12th August 2006 at Pune
Club , Pune. Under the patronage of Pune Club & with the support from
Pune District Chess Association, the Buddibal krida Trust organized
the tournament. (CPAI is thankful to Swati Ghate for this report)
The tournament is rapidly gaining the status as lot of rated player
from Maharashtra participated in it. Total 150 players took part in
this blitz tourney. Reputed player like IM Akskayraj Kore, WGM Swati
Ghate (LIC of India), WGM Eesha Karawade, IM C.S.Gokhale (IA), IM
Prathamesh Mokal , Vikramaditya Kambale ( Railways), Amardeep Bartake
(Railways) , Kiran Panditrao (Central Excise), Hemant Mandhare, Soumya
Swaminathan, Amruta Mokal, Devangi Patankar participated in the
tournament. Lot of young talented players made their mark by upsetting
seeded players.
Akshayraj Kore, who has recently made his third IM norm in the
tournament at Ukraine finished first with 8 points. Vikramaditya
Kamble beat Akshay in the last round but with the implementation of
progressive score, had to satisfy with 2nd position. The tournament
was lively with lot of interesting games, up & down results from the
start. The budding player from Pune, Chaitanya Kulkarni started the
sensation by beating Prathamesh Mokal in the second round. The next
victim was Swati Ghate. Swati lost on time against Vinod Bhagwat in
the 4th round. With the clock ticking away CS Gokhale could not cashed
his advantage against Akshay in the fifth round & lost his way. Akshay
was sole leader after 6th round & never looked back thereafter. Eesha
karavade was trailing behind Akshay with half point till 7th round but
couldn’t keep the momentum & lost the last two rounds. Another
up-coming player Nikhil Joshi defeated Swati Ghate in the 8th round.
Swati couldn’t handle the tension of running time & accepted the
defeat with clock showing 00:00 timing. The spectators witnessed
interesting struggle in the last round as Vikramaditya Kamble (Western
Railways) won against unbeaten Kore. Amardeep Bartakke & Nikhil Joshi
agreed a friendly draw & ensured the joint third placing with 7.5
points. Swati Ghate defeated CS Gokhale on the third board & was
placed 5th with 7 points.
The prizes were given by Mr. Munit Chinoy, President Pune Club & Mr.
Sayrus Patel, Secy, Pune Club. Mr. Chinoy appreciated the smooth &
efficient conduct of this tournaments & on this occasion Mr. Prakash
Kunte was also felicitated for his contribution for growth of chess
atmosphere in Pune.
The Cpai takes this opportunity to thank the local press for promoting
chess by giving coverage to this tournaments. The pune team of Cpai is
planning to hold such activities in near future. Next blitz is
announced to be held on 8th Oct 2006.

GM Abhijit Kunte won the 1st Poona Club Blitz tournament !

The 1st Poona Club Blitz Event was organised by Buddhibal Krida Trust
In Association with CPAI on 30th July 2006 at Poona Club, Pune. Poona
club has come up a big way & started a new tradition in the Indian
chess history by sponsoring a series of blitz championship.
Poona Club will be sponsoring 6 Blitz events like this in Pune. The
champions of this blitz tourneys will be selected to participate in
the Rs.5 Lac prize money knock out championship to be held in the year
end.
The first of this series was held on 30th July & grand success was
attributed as total 194 players participated in this event. Mr. Munit
Chinoy, President, Poona Club & Mr. Cyrus Patel inaugurated the event.
On this occasion Mr.Chinoy of Poona club has promised to their
full-fledged & long lasting support for Chess fraternity. Grand Master
Abhijit Kunte, WGM Swati Ghate, WGM Eesha Karavade, IM C.S. Gokhale, &
IM Prathamesh Mokal made the event prestigious. Several National
talents like Soumya Swaminathan, Amruta Mokal & lot of local youngster
also enjoyed the flavor of blitz tourney. Abhijit scored 8.5 points
convincingly out of possible 9 rounds & claimed the title. He was
awarded Rs. 5000/- as well as the trophy as the first prize. One of
the Indian women talent Eesha Karavade, who recently achieved her
maiden IM norm in the tournament at Spain showed the same form &
finished 2nd with 8 points. Soumitra Mujumdar made the upset by
defeating CS Gokhale in the 4th round & rightly claimed the 3rd
Position. CS Gokhale defeated Swati Ghate in the last round & also
tied to second position by scoring 8 points. Prathamesh Mokal
struggling with his bad form could not finish in the top bracket.
National Champion Swati Ghate was also out of form & by scoring 6.5
points could only claim Best ladies prize. Mr. S.K.Sharma, Chief
Commissioner of Income tax gave away the prizes. Mr. Satish Desai,
President of Pune District Chess Association was also present on the
occasion & with a sense of humour remarked if the chief commissioner
of Income tax extends his full support by captivating the black money
from big buddies & sponsoring some chess event, it will be no longer
that India can produce many more Vishwanathan Anand. Arbiter Joseph
D'souza & his able team smoothly conducted the tournament. Total prize
money for this tournament was 25,000/- Rs. and total 30 prizes were
distributed.
